Today we are pleased to announce that we have taken yet another step toward research discoveries in the treatment of migraines and headaches. Using the Statice software, the health app M-Sense was able to successfully anonymize their customer data to enable medical research.

Healthcare data is crucial for researchers to understand the patterns and causes of disease. The more data you have — the better the results. Mobile apps could be the new ideal data source for medical research.

Regulations on data privacy such as the GDPR rightfully demand that companies preserve the privacy rights of individuals and their data from misuse, which makes companies wonder if they can share and use the data at all.

Healthcare data, in particular, is extremely sensitive and must be treated with caution, to prevent harm to any individuals through disclosure of their personal data. But it isn’t just hospitals and clinics that are sitting on sensitive patient data. Many health apps gather data from thousands of users. Such is the case for the migraine and headache app M-sense, where users document their disease progression and symptoms on a regular basis.

By creating synthetic patient data, Statice is enabling M-sense to freely share their data for research purposes — while fully preserving the privacy of the individuals involved. Statice and M-sense are together proving that hypersensitive data can be anonymized without any significant loss of quality or statistical significance.
